fff55. It's a riot.

Photo shamelessly looted from thisisnottingham.co.uk
Smashing and burning and looting and storming.
Charging around
and breaking into the Pound
Shop to steal
useless things with no real
value.
The mob is making its feelings clear
and armed police in riot gear
are fighting back.
Society’s cracked.
And no-one hears a small
voice in the darkness among it all
crying ‘help!’

*********

We arrived at work on Tuesday morning to find our front door smashed. Our office is on an easy escape route from the shopping centre in the photo. Compared with some cities, we had it easy. They fire-bombed a police station but there have been no serious injuries and no buildings needing to be demolished.  But this unrest has touched me directly.

I work for a charity. We can't afford to be wasting money on repairing doors. We have a better use for the money.

Angry with society?  I am now. I'm just saying........

FFF55 is a weekly challenge to write a 55 word story (ok it's a poem) and it's hosted by the G Man at Mister Knowitall's Blog. Go there and see.

Interesting comments coming out, the youth think it is a youth issue, the black community think it's black issue, the press think it's a mindless issue, the police think it's a criminal issue, the left think it's a parenting issue and the government think it is whatever they believe you want to hear.

Hi Anne .. I just don't like to think .. but I do feel for all who just simply don't deserve the deaths, the harm and the senseless destruction that's occurred ... and do those little uncaring cheating souls think at all .. I also feel for those now trying to repair all the various sorts of damage done .. to people, to property, to communities ..

Completely irresponsible and what purpose does it serve, and do people not have any accountability to society ...

Enough - Hilary

I am so glad that I stopped by to read your marvelous 55 because I have not read any blogger who is right there on the front lines. I feel so badly for you, and sure appreciate your comment about where the money for repairs could better be utilized. It is tragic.

I don't know if you intended it to be so, but your piece is rap-like and, therefore, all the more effective.

Thanks everyone. I think it's helped get some of it out of my system because I've written this.

@Lydia. I sort of wanted it to sound disjointed and have no pattern - like the riots. I'd not noticed it was like a rap. Happy coincidence! Thanks for noticing that.
