fff55: The Plumbline and the City

What makes a city?

Architects and builders
Pencils and plumb lines
Bricks and mortar
Concrete and steel.

Roads and railways
Alleys and roundabouts
Pavements and walk-ways
Bridges and tunnels.

Shops and offices
Churches and temples
Hotels and hospitals
Houses, not homes.

Where are the people?
Residents and workers
Visitors and tourists
A city needs people.

This week's contribution to Flash Fiction Friday 55, which is hosted by the great G-Man over at Mr. Knowitall's Blog.

The photo is of a sculpture called The Plumbline and the City, by Clark Fitz-Gerald, in Coventry Cathedral.
